The fastest way is to follow the creek right up until you have a straight shot up to the saddle on the ridge separating Cherry Creek from the lake (stay far enough away from the creek to avoid bushwhacking but close enough that you don't have to scramble and zig zag too much through the rocks on the sides of the canyon - the South side of the creek is probably better for this). Then, once over the saddle, skirt to the east of the massive thicket of manzanita by following the rocks down to the creek drainage, then immediately cross the creek and hike up the granite on the other side where you'll find much easier terrain.
